Given that the Magpies paid £45 million (Sky Sports) for his services, then it put that extra pressure on him.
But fast forward to the present and Anthony Gordon is now proving to be a player much admired, with Clint Dempsey stating that he is ‘dangerous’ and ‘the future’, as he told CBS Sports on Paramount+ (28/11/23 at 7:15 pm).
It could be argued that Anthony Gordon is one of the form players in the Premier League this season – he has five goals and four assists to his name.
One thing is for sure, the all-action winger is getting the plaudits, with former Fulham and Tottenham star Clint Dempsey being the latest to do so.

What I like about him is that he is only 22 years old,” said Dempsey. “He has five goals and three assists already this season.
“He can beat players down the line, but he can also cut inside and get on his right foot. He is good with both feet. He whips in good balls.
“I think he is a dangerous player and the future.”
Euro 2024 is around the corner, and so far, it doesn’t seem as though Gordon is part of England’s plans or someone who he is going to get picked.
Despite his form, not just in the Premier League, but in the Champions League also, he continues to get overlooked.
Gareth Southgate handed debut calls to the likes of Rico Lewis, Cole Palmer and Ezri Konsa during the latest international round of fixtures.
But Gordon was snubbed, to the surprise of many, because his form and performances deserve that call.
