The Friday before the Browns’ Week 4 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens,David Njokusat in his backyard and prepared for his weekly bonfire that he uses to help meditate and clear his mind. His music played in the background and he began to build the fire, but this time he used a different lighter fluid than what he normally uses. He sprayed the wood with the fluid and went to spark the flame. Once the flame took to the lighter fluid, an explosion occurred that sent flames up through Njoku’s hands and arms to his face. Njoku shared some details about the experience through social media in the past couple of weeks but never truly opened up about it until Friday.

December kicks off the NFL’s annual “My Cause My Cleats” initiative where players get to customize their cleats and promote any charitable organization. The organizations represented are vast and this year, David Njoku is representing the American Burn Association with his cleats. The Browns shared a video of Njoku talking through the burn experience, what happened, what the pain was like, what the consequences were and many details that he has never shared before. What he also goes into is why he decided to still play that following Sunday and what that experience was like. He mentions the pain and irritation that he felt just moving, let alone playing football. In that Week 4 game against the Ravens Njoku led all Browns receivers with six catches for 46 yards. Although the game didnt go the Browns’ way, Njoku proved that he is not only a leader of this football team but someone who will do anything for it.
