Why Louis Rees-Zammit is a perfect fit for the Kansas City Chiefs both on and off the field
Rees-Zammit, the former winger for Wales, would have been thrilled to sign with any NFL team, but the Chiefs are above the rest.
To say that Louis Rees-Zammit found the Kansas City Chiefs to be the ideal destination would be an understatement. The former Wales wide receiver will now be working under one of the best coaches in the National Football League, Andy Reid, and possibly playing next to quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who has started six seasons and won three Super Bowls.
The word “potentially” is used purposefully because Rees-Zammit has to complete an incredible NFL crash course in order to make the final 53-man roster at the end of August. He certainly possesses the physical prowess to do so; the difficulty lies in learning all of the theories, strategies, and jargon associated with competing at a level that thousands of college players, despite their lifelong dedication to the sport, are unable to attain annually.
The NFL’s International Player Pathway, a 10-week program for which Rees-Zammit gave up rugby in January, is truly amazing. Last week, he participated in several drills in front of NFL scouts in Florida. Before signing with the Chiefs, Rees-Zammit paid visits to the Denver Broncos, New York Jets, and Cleveland Browns.
The timing of his signing with the Kansas City Chiefs could not be more intriguing, given their remarkable success under Reid and Mahomes as well as the increased media attention that every Chiefs game now garners due to Travis Kelce’s romance with Taylor Swift. Sales of Kelce shirts increased by 400% the previous season, and American interest in the team may be at an all-time high—a remarkable feat given their 1970 Super Bowl IV victory with quarterback Len Dawson and head coach Hank Stram.
