Green Bay Packers Legend Clay Matthews has Strong Opinion About Aaron Jones Release
Packers head coach Matt Lefleur was blindsided by the release of running back Aaron Jones.
According to Jason Wilde with the Wisconsin State Journal, LaFleur said he was surprised by the decline to release Jones: “It kind of caught me off guard, to be honest with you,” LaFleur confessed, “I’m not involved in those types of conversations.” Lafleur stated this during the NFC coaches’ breakfast Tuesday
The news came as a surprise to Packers fans. Most would assume LaFleur should or would be in on those conversations.
“With a rookie* QB, young receiving corp and Watson injured, Jones WAS GBs offense. He even took a pay cut to stay with the team in 2023! But I digress. I find the lack of communication between HC and GM to be wild. LaFleur has been one of the most successful coaches and doesn’t have a say!?”
Matthews’s anger was directed at general manager Brian Gutekunst. He supports quarterback Jordan Love (the asterisks next to rookie meant to show he was not a rookie, but it was his first year starting) and head coach Matt Lefleur.
Matthews and Lafleur did not cross paths as Packers player and coach, but that is not to say that Clay doesn’t know Matt. In his final statement about the situation, Clay shows his support for Lafleur. Clay’s issue of Lafleur not having a say in the situation has merit, as head coaches should have some say in personnel.
The running back situation in Green Bay carries a lot of weight for many heading into the 2024 season. We will see if general manager Brian Gutekunst made the correct call.
