Leicester City clinched the Championship title with a game to spare, beating Preston North End 3-0 at Deepdale to leave Leeds United fighting it out for the second automatic promotion spot
Leicester City’s players and fans could not resist taking a swipe at Leeds United after pipping them to the Championship title. Enzo Maresca’s side cruised to a 3-0 victory at Preston North End last night, leaving the Whites and Ipswich Town to battle it out for the second automatic promotion spot.
United are ahead of the Tractor Boys on goal difference but Kieran McKenna’s team will go above them if they pick up a positive result in their game hand against Coventry City tonight. It is looking increasingly likely that the Whites will have to settle for the play-offs in their quest to book an instant Premier League return.
A little over two months ago, United fought back from a goal down to beat the Foxes 3-1 at a vociferous Elland Road and cut a gap that had been 17 points over Christmas to just six to the leaders. It appeared that Daniel Farke’s team had blown the title race wide open and United supporters bounced to ‘I Predict A Riot’ by Leeds-based rock band Kaiser Chiefs at the final whistle.
Leicester’s travelling faithful had not forgotten the moment and sang ‘I predict the play-offs’ at Deepdale following their title success. The mockery of United continued in City’s dressing room, with a video emerging of Jamie Vardy, Harry Winks and company singing ‘I predict a riot’ as they celebrated. Former England striker Vardy rolled back the years, scoring a goal in each half to take his season tally to 20 across all competitions.
There is uncertainty surrounding the 37-year-old’s long-term future. His contract expires at the end of the season.
City boss Maresca: “Jamie Vardy is Leicester. Jamie Vardy has always scored goals in his life and he’s going to score goals even when he’s 40, 45.
“It’s in his blood to score goals. We are very lucky that he’s our player.
“Now we finish (the season), we have a game Saturday, and then we sit. But my feeling is that he’s going to stay – this is my feeling, if I can decide.”
