SAD NEWS: Alabama loses another defensive back as Tony Mitchell enters the transfer portal

The Alabama Football team has lost another young defensive back to the transfer portal as Tony Mitchell enters the transfer portal. As a true freshman, Mitchell appeared in seven games mostly on special teams recording one tackle. The Alabaster, AL native was a four-star recruit in the 2023 signing class as a top-200 recruit and the 15th-ranked cornerback.

The loss marks the Alabama Football team’s ninth transfer loss of the Spring Transfer period and the second loss in the defensive back room as Peyton Woodyard entered the Portal on Monday. The Tide have been pursuing experience in the defensive back room to combat their losses to the NFL Draft and the transfer portal landing Charlotte safety Kameron Howard while missing out on Arizona State transfer Ed Woods.

The departure of Tony Mitchell comes as somewhat of a shock as he was in contention for a serious role on the team either at star or elsewhere in the defense. The addition of Howard and the emergence of players like Red Morgan and Bray Hubbard this Spring may have pushed Mitchell into the transfer portal. The potential of Mitchell was rumored but, it seemed that Mitchell re-affirmed his commitment to the program.

After a rather quiet start to the spring transfer period, things have ramped up in the past weeks as the Tide have lost Woodyard, Mitchell, James Brockermeyer, and Khurtiss Perry to the transfer portal.

Will the Tide push for additional roster reinforcements?

The losses of players in this transfer period have opened up a few unexpected scholarships for Kalen DeBoer and Courtney Morgan to work with. The Tide may now look to be more active in the final weeks of the transfer portal potentially adding high-upside players. If the Tide looks to pursue depth or starting caliber players the positions to watch are on the offensive line, cornerback, safety, and potentially experience at wide receiver.
