Leeds United has been ordered to pay £40 million for three appearances following Aston Villa’s interest

BirminghamLive gives you the latest Aston Villa news, including former transfer target Jean-Kevin Augustin being owed a large fee by Leeds United following a court fight.

Leeds United have been ordered to pay Jean-Kevin Augustin, a former Aston Villa transfer target, a massive £24.5 million after he breached his contract.

The striker joined Leeds on loan from RB Leipzig in January 2020, with an option to buy if they earned promotion to the Premier League the following season, but he only played 48 minutes under Marcelo Bielsa before returning to Germany. Augustin only made three substitute appearances before his first season in England was cut short due to injury.

Augustin had been linked with a move to the Premier League, with Crystal Palace and Villa rumoured to be interested in the summer of 2019. His loan stay at Elland Road legally ended on June 30, and with Leeds not promoted until July 17 owing to Covid delays, the club claimed they were no longer obligated for a permanent transfer agreement.

However, a FIFA tribunal decided against them, and their appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) was also denied last November.

Leeds and Leipzig eventually reached an agreement of £15.5 million, only for the player to file his own lawsuit.

Leeds will have to pay £40 million in both cases. “FIFA can confirm that a decision was rendered by the Dispute Resolution Chamber of the Football Tribunal on 30 March 2023 in the case between the player, Jean-Kevin Augustin, and the English club, Leeds United FC,” a statement from FIFA said. We are unable to speak further because the case is not yet final and binding.”
