Michigan football assistant Denard Robinson is no longer with the team.
Michigan football assistant coach and former quarterback Denard Robinson is no longer with the program. Robinson was relieved of his duties following an arrest, per The Athletic. Robinson had been suspended by Michigan following his April arrest for allegedly operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
“He is no longer on staff,” Michigan football spokesman Dave Ablauf said Tuesday, per the Detroit News. “I can’t comment further because it’s a personnel matter.”
Robinson was working for the Michigan football program as assistant director of player personnel. He had been hired by former head coach Jim Harbaugh in 2022, and retained by current coach Sherrone Moore. Robinson was an alumnus of the program, playing quarterback for the team from 2009-2012.
Robinson’s legal matter
On April 15 this year, Robinson was involved in a single vehicle car crash in Michigan, per the Detroit News. He was arrested by police following the incident. The crash occurred near the Michigan football program facilities. The university suspended Robinson following the arrest, and the legal matter is ongoing.
Robinson is well-known to Michigan football fans. He was recruited to play quarterback for the team under former coach Rich Rodriguez. Robinson is the record holder for the most rushing yards in college football by a quarterback, per ESPN. He started 37 games for the Wolverines, and rushed for 4,495 yards in his college career. He also set the single-season rushing record for a quarterback, with 1,702 yards during the 2010 season. That was Rodriguez’s last season in Michigan.
Before returning to Michigan, Robinson played briefly in the NFL for the Jacksonville Jaguars. He also worked as an assistant for the Jaguars, as offensive quality control coach and scouting assistant. He was also an offensive analyst for Jacksonville University during the 2019 season.
Robinson is not the only assistant coach at Michigan to be arrested this offseason. Defensive line coach Greg Scruggs was arrested in March and resigned from the team, per ESPN. He was also arrested for allegedly operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
