Leeds United appear to have reached a verbal arrangement with top scorer Rodrigo that will allow him to depart Elland Road if the club is demoted from the Premier League, according to Football Insider.
Rodrigo has been a standout for the Whites this season, with current head coach Javi Gracia describing him as a “very important” player.
Gracia said this on him after a recent 2-2 draw with Brighton:
“Rodrigo is a very important player for us, he needs to recover his best condition because he helped the team but he can only play around 30 minutes.”
The 32-year-old has scored eight more goals than any other Leeds player this season, with 11 of his 13 goals coming in the Premier League.
He appears likely to play a key role in the club’s fight to avoid relegation in the coming weeks, but if things don’t go as planned on the pitch, he might be on his way out in the summer.
Football Insider writer Pete O’Rourke shared an update on Rodrigo that he has heard from Leeds in the last 48 hours. He revealed that the Whites are close to reaching a verbal deal with the Spaniard under which the player would be sold if they were relegated.
Rodrigo has already expressed a desire to leave if Leeds were relegated to the Championship, and it appears that Andrea Radrizzani and the 49ers Enterprises will allow him to do so in the worst-case situation.
The player’s current contract is slated to end in 2024, so he might stay in Yorkshire if the club avoids relegation. However, recent reports suggested that Rodrigo would have to accept a pay cut in order to renew his contract, with his present remuneration costing £100,000 per week.
On a personal side, he has found some form this season, so if he helps the club stay up, there may be reasons for fresh contract discussions to be explored amongst all parties. Rodrigo scored 13 Premier League goals in his first two seasons and could surpass that total this season.
