Leicester City consider eye-catching move for 47-year-old as Enzo Maresca perfect replacement

Leicester City are considering Ruud van Nistelrooy as they begin their search for Enzo Maresca replacements, reporter Sacha Tavolieri has said.

Leicester City are heading for the Premier League after winning the Championship title, booking their place back in the top-flight at the first time of asking.

However, the Foxes enter the summer with a new dilemma to go with their PSR concerns.

Manager Enzo Maresca looks to be on the brink of a high-profile move to Chelsea. The Stamford Bridge outfit have identified him as the top target to replace Mauricio Pochettino and it seems a matter of time before the switch is confirmed.

As such, Leicester City are pursuing a new boss, and an intriguing link has already emerged.

Writing on X, Belgian reporter Sacha Tavolieri reveals that Dutch legend Ruud van Nistelrooy is being considered for the soon-to-be vacant post at the King Power Stadium

After a glittering career on the pitch, van Nistelrooy embarked on his coaching journey with PSV, working his way through the youth ranks before leading the first-team. In his sole season, he won the league and cup double before resigning in May 2023.

He has remained out of managerial work since.

A smart appointment

Leicester City are in a tricky position this summer and bringing in a new boss presents another challenge.

It can prove a costly process, but the Foxes can easily avoid paying a hefty compensation fee by bringing in a boss who is already out of work. There will be great options on the market for them to consider, and van Nistelrooy looks to be among them.

Bringing in a manager out of work means the Foxes avoid spending a big fee on bringing in a manager from another club.Bringing in a manager out of work means the Foxes avoid spending a big fee on bringing in a manager from another club.

That might be the best thing for the club given their position. An ideal candidate might already be in a post but with the club’s financial standing in mind, they might not have much of a choice.

Moving fast

Many clubs keep potential candidates in mind even when their managerial position is certain. It ensures they’re well prepared should someone come in for their boss, or if form tails off and a change is needed swiftly.

It would be interesting to know if Leicester City have done this, or if they’re quickly putting all hands on deck in a bid to identify the ideal Maresca heir.

One thing for sure is that the sooner the Foxes name a new boss, the better.

Getting Maresca’s replacement quickly means they can limit how much the change disrupts their preparations for next season, also giving the incoming boss plenty of time to get to grips with and shape the squad to his liking.

Further links are sure to emerge, but van Nistelrooy is certainly an eye-catching target given the success he has found in his brief managerial career to date.
