Eighteen-year-old set for upcoming campaign with new deal
Young defender Frankie Edwards has penned his first professional contract at Colchester United after an encouraging 2023/24 campaign with the Academy.
Edwards was a regular for the U18s and U21s last term, and enjoyed his first taste of men’s football with a loan stint at fellow Essex side Maldon and Tiptree.
Frankie is the fifth youngster to sign their first professional deal this summer, and says that he will keep working hard to get more opportunities with the club.
“It was tough last season, there was a lot of hard work, ups and downs, but I felt I worked hard enough and deserved a professional contract.”
Getting back to fitness last season, Frankie was also included in some first team training sessions and says it was an eye-opening experience.
“It was really good. I now know what tempo the first team is – it was a really good experience. Every time I played, I enjoyed it.”
Having had some experience training with the first team in the 2023/24 season, Frankie says he that he wants more to do with Danny & Nicky’s squad this term.
“Now, I want to have the best possible season to try and extend it [new contract]. Now my goal is to try and make my first team debut – hopefully this year I will be able to if I keep working hard for it.”
Following in the footsteps of Kien Connolly, Max Jolliffe, Harrison Chamberlain and most recently, Milton Oni, Frankie will re-join his teammates next week in preparation for the upcoming campaign.
