Leicester City 90% close to hijacking £21m transfer for Colombia winger as Cooper lunch new tactics

Yaser Asprilla had looked set to move to Rennes but reports from France say the 20-year-old Watford man now looks more likely to switch to the King Power Stadium

Leicester City are reportedly hijacking Rennes’ move for Watford attacker Yaser Asprilla in a deal that could reach €25m (£21m).

City’s current priority in the transfer window is to strengthen their attack and they appear to be closing in on a new recruit. FootMercato in France report that, having previously been in advanced talks with Ligue 1 side Rennes, Asprilla’s agent is now in the UK to discuss with City and potentially seal a move.

Leicester City look to be closing in on Watford winger Yaser Asprilla

The 20-year-old Colombian international was one of the top-performing young players in the Championship last season. He finished the campaign with six goals and seven assists for the Hornets.

His profile looks very similar to that of Matias Soule, the Argentinian forward targeted by City but who chose to move to Roma instead. Asprilla played a lot of football on the right wing last season, cutting in onto his favoured left foot, but also played in an attacking midfield role.

Steve Cooper’s set-up looks to require one of the wingers to come inside when City have possession. That’s so one of the full-backs can advance down the flank and become an auxiliary wide-man.

Asprilla, who has also been linked to Porto this summer, has spent the past two seasons with Watford, joining the club from Envigado in his native Colombia. He’s already established himself in his country’s squad, and was part of the group that reached the final of Copa America this summer, albeit he only played 18 minutes.
