Steven Bergwijn, whose highlight with Spurs came at the King Power Stadium, is now playing for Ajax, who are reportedly happy to sell as they look to balance their finances
Leicester City are in discussions with Ajax over a potential transfer for Dutch international winger Steven Bergwijn, reports from the Netherlands have said.
City are keen to strengthen in attacking areas and former Tottenham man Bergwijn is the latest name to emerge. De Telegraaf report that City have been in talks with Ajax over a deal for a few days as they look to settle on a price.
Ajax are said to want upwards of €20m (£17m), having already rejected a €15m (£13m) offer from MLS side Atlanta United. But they are wary that should their demands be too high, City will walk away.
The Dutch giants are happy to sell, as they need to sort out their finances, with Bergwijn representing one of their most valuable players, and one of their highest earners. He’s been with the club for two years since joining from Spurs, scoring 29 goals in 76 games in that time.
In two-and-a-half seasons at Tottenham, Bergwijn never established himself as a key player. His highlight came at the King Power Stadium, when he scored twice in injury time, in the 95th and 97th minutes, to clutch victory from the jaws of defeat against Brendan Rodgers’ City.
Playing on both flanks as well as occasionally in the middle, Bergwijn fits the bill for what City are seeking, with competition for Stephy Mavididi and Abdul Fatawu required. At Ajax last season, he mostly played on the left wing, cutting in onto his favoured right foot.
The 26-year-old was part of the Dutch squad that reached the Euro 2024 semi-finals. He played twice, starting on the right for their last-16 and quarter-final ties against Romania and Turkey, but was substituted at half-time in both games.
