As he seeks a long-term replacement for Antonio Conte, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is allegedly interested in hiring Xabi Alonso the club’s new manager. The Bayer Leverkusen coach is well-regarded in the football world and would be an ambitious if risky choice as the team looks to the future.
Alonso will wield significant power with potential acquisitions as players aspire to work with one of the best midfielders of all time. Express Sport speculates on who he might be able to persuade to move to north London as Spurs seek a dream rebirth after a difficult season.
Florian Wirtz
Wirtz is the most exciting offensive talent in the Leverkusen squad and around Germany. After missing nine months due to a knee injury, he has come back strong, scoring four goals and assisting eight times in 20 games this season.
Tottenham are in desperate need of some creativity in central positions, and Wirtz has plenty of it. Furthermore, at only 20 years old, he has the potential to become one of the world’s finest while staying in North London as Tottenham aim for the long term. He would be a massive boost for the Lilywhites and should be at the top of their wish list if Alonso is hired.
Piero Hincapie
Tottenham have been dreadful defensively at times this season, with their porous backline negating much of Harry Kane’s superb work upfront.
If they opt to hire Alonso, he may be able to help them land Ecuadorian centre-back Hincapie, who has been heavily connected with the club in recent months.
The 21-year-old is one of the world’s greatest young defenders and can fill in for Ben Davies and Clement Lenglet on the left side of the defense. A number of other clubs have expressed interest in Hincapie, but Alonso’s presence could give Spurs the upper hand.
Edmund Tapsoba
Tottenham’s defense has been so bad this season that one new signing is unlikely to be enough to get them back to the top of the Premier League. Eric Dier’s performances, in particular, have been disappointing, and a replacement is sorely needed.
Tapsoba, who played alongside Hincapie and Alonso at Leverkusen, may be an alternative. The 24-year-old is a good presence at the back and should grow under the pressure of playing in the Premier League, giving the Lilywhites the opportunity to alter their backline.
