Paul Warne issues Derby County transfer update ahead of crucial meeting

The Rams are aiming to put the finishing touches to the squad ahead of the window closing next Friday

Stephen Warnock believes Paul Warne was a shrewd appointment.

Paul Warne is set for a transfer meeting with key Derby County staff and owner David Clowes as they prepare for the final week of the window.

Derby are keen to add a striker, a midfielder and a defender to the group before the window shuts next Friday. They are the three priorities for Warne now that he has landed Jacob Widell Zetterstrom from Djurgarden with the Sweden international in line to make his debut at Watford on Saturday (3pm).

Another recruitment meeting will take place this afternoon at which talent identification lead Mark Thomas, chief executive Stephen Pearce and Clowes will be present. Warne says major cash demands from agents aren’t helping matters in a market where demand outweighs supply, particularly in terms of strikers.

Asked how his search for a striker is going, Warne said: “Difficulty is probably the nicest way to put it. There are different phases of the transfer window and we are now in the extortionate ridiculous phase of the transfer window, and then this time next week, it all calms down again.

“So it’s awkward. There are players that we want to sign and for every football club there are players that you can’t afford, and that’s the honest truth. We’re doing everything we can. We still need to get another midfielder in which I feel like we’re a long way down the line with.
