Tottenham Hotspur are currently at a crossroads, with several of its players thought surplus to needs by fans.
When Tottenham Hotspur were thrashed 5-1 by Newcastle United in 2016, the demoted Magpies produced a team that was unrecognizable to today’s standards. Gini Wijnaldum went on to win the Champions League, aided by Moussa Sissoko handing away the first-minute penalty for Tottenham against Liverpool, while Aleksandr Mitrovic has lived many lives since.
Despite this, five of Tottenham’s starting eleven from that game seven years ago were still in the squad for Sunday’s 6-1 defeat to Newcastle. Ryan Mason, the club’s new acting manager after Cristian Stellini’s dismissal, started in midfield. If this summer’s transfer window reflects chairman Daniel Levy’s inability to evolve, Tottenham will simply have to bring in a new generation – or risk stagnating further.
After all, Newcastle may bring an end to the Big Six period, leaving Spurs as a contender on the outskirts of the elite. From back to front, major decisions must be made on nearly every player in the club.
