EFL pundit Clinton Morrison fears he has put the ‘kiss of death’ on his former club after tipping Coventry City for the play-offs.
The former Sky Blues striker, who scored 23 goals in 101 appearances over two Championship seasons between 2008 and 2010, admits he had concerns after seeing Mark Robins’ men suffer their second defeat in their opening four league games last time out. The 45-year-old, however, has total confidence in the experienced manager and the strength of this season’s squad following a busy summer in the transfer window.
Asked if he’s had to adjust his view on how the Sky Blues will do this season after two defeats, one win and a draw in the opening league games, Morrison told CoventryLive via 10bet: “I’m always positive about Coventry’s chances, especially with Mark Robins in charge.
“Although after they lost at home to Norwich, I was thinking to myself, ‘I hope I haven’t given them the kiss of death by tipping them for the play-offs.”
He added: “I like what Coventry have done in the transfer window; they’ve brought in some good players. Despite that, there is no doubt that they are missing Ben Sheaf. He’s a fantastic midfielder and his injury has really been felt.
“Brandon Thomas-Asante has come in from West Bromwich Albion and he’s been joined by Ephron Mason-Clark from Peterborough. I think they’re both good players that will do well in the Championship this season. Jack Rudoni is a good signing.
“I was surprised that the club sold Kasey Palmer to Hull City. I think Kasey is a very good player and was one of the stars of Coventry’s team last season.
“Haji Wright is a good player. Ellis Sims, he’s shown what he can do. I think that Milan van Ewijk is one of the best right backs in the division. He loves getting forward.”
He concluded: “Coventry have enough. They’ve got a lot of good options, and they’ve got a good manager in Mark Robins.”
Although Robins is often credited for the brilliant job he’s done in turning City from a League Two outfit in the doldrums to a top end Championship side in the last seven years, Morrison is at a loss as to why the manager hasn’t been linked with any high profile vacancies.
“I’ve always said that I don’t understand how Mark is never a top candidate when jobs pop up in the Championship or in the Premier League,” he said.
“He deserves to be in the conversation because he’s done a brilliant job at Coventry. For selfish reasons, I don’t want him in the frame. I want him to stay at Coventry. I would love to see him take Coventry into the play-offs and into the Premier League. I think they’ve got a chance to do that this season.”
