Tottenham Hotspur need to be challenging on all fronts this season and bring a trophy home to end the long wait for silverware. With that in mind, Ange Postecoglou should field a fairly strong side for the Carabao Cup third-round clash with Coventry City.
Go strong and get the job done
Spurs travel to the Coventry Building Society Arena on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, to take on the Championship outfit, and while the game presents a good chance to rest some key players, Postecoglou should not take anything for granted.
The Lilywhites have to get through this tie and go deep into the competition, so here’s the lineup I’d like to see us go for in order to get the job done, while still giving some squad players a meaningful run-out.
Guglielmo Vicario: While it would be nice to give Brandon Austin some gametime, he can wait for the Europa League. We need to be solid at the back and there’s no reason to rest Vicario.
Pedro Porro: I think resting both our full-backs would be a mistake, and Destiny Udogie definitely needs the break more as he’s still only just back from injury. Porro is in top form and that should not be interrupted.
Radu Dragusin: The Romanian got his first taste of action in the game against Newcastle and looked good. He should be starting every cup game this season, simple as that.
Ben Davies: Both Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven can sit this one out, and it is games like this that are made for Ben Davies. His experience will be very important here.
Djed Spence: If we were resting Porro instead, I’d have Spence in his more natural role on the right, but he has looked solid enough on the left and I expect him to get substantial minutes here given he’s not in the Europa League squad.
Archie Gray: The teenager has already accrued some minutes in the league off the bench, but it’s time for him to get a start and really show what he can do. Having played in the Championship last season, taking on Coventry should not be an issue for the youngster.
Lucas Bergvall: We know Bergvall is set to have a big month in September, and it all starts here. Like Gray, he’s had a nibble already, but he deserves to be given a full meal and play from the off in this tie. He could really make an impact in a game like this.
James Maddison: With the players I’m leaving out of this team, I’d have Maddison in as our captain for the night. He’s looking sharper with each game, and dropping him for this one would only hinder his momentum. Plus, he will be hungry to play against his former club.
Wilson Odobert: The young Frenchman has made a decent start to his Spurs career, but he could really excel if he’s given the start for the cup game. Against Championship opposition, his pace and trickery could be dangerous.
Mikey Moore: I’ve been crying out for Mikey Moore to get some minutes, or at least be on the bench as an option. I doubt Postecoglou will actually give him the start against Coventry, but it would be so exciting if he did.
Dominic Solanke: Our big-money striker is just back from injury, and he needs all the minutes he can get. In a game like this, you’d fancy Solanke to bag a goal, and that could be crucial for his confidence moving forward.
