Tom Brady sends message to Wrexham fans and Rob McElhenney after Birmingham City clash

Wrexham are still sitting top of the League One table despite losing 3-1 at Birmingham City on Monday night.

All eyes were on St. Andrew’s as Wrexham travelled to take on Birmingham City in one of the most keenly-anticipated League One meetings in recent times.

This was a real meeting of celebrities as Tom Brady arrived to cheer on Birmingham City given his position as a minority shareholder in the club.

NFL legend Brady sparred with Wrexham’s Rob McElhenney ahead of the game and David Beckham even popped in to watch from the stands.

Wrexham made a dream start with Jack Marriott scoring early on but this was Birmingham’s night as they dominated and claimed a 3-1 win.

Wrexham’s run is over; the unbeaten start to the League One season has come to an end and Arthur Okonkwo’s run of clean sheets has ended at four games.

Tom Brady message to Wrexham

Monday’s game has really divided opinion.

Some have loved the celebrity involvement and believe that figures such as Brady, Beckham and McElhenney are only helping raise the profile of League One football.

Others aren’t quite so keen, feeling that this game was over-hyped and placed too much focus on people who weren’t on the pitch.

Brady was one of those as the former New England Patriots star cheered on Birmingham whilst sitting next to Beckham.

The seven-time Super Bowl winner has now taken to social media to post his reflections on Monday’s game and share a message with Wrexham.

Brady talked up the Birmingham atmosphere and their project before thanking McElhenney, Wrexham and the club’s fans for ‘one of the best stadium atmospheres I’ve ever been a part of’.

Brady added that Birmingham will now be ready to face Wrexham in the return game, which will take place in January.

Birmingham on a different planet to Wrexham

Wrexham’s defeat was a disappointment after such a strong start but the better team certainly won.

Fans may still dream of promotion to the Championship and why not? Wrexham sit top of the League One table after all.

The reality is though that Birmingham have spent enormously over the summer, more than any League One club has ever spent in a single window.

The Blues are operating on a different level financially to Wrexham and that gulf showed on Monday.

That is no great shame for Wrexham, who were still a National League club just 18 months ago.

Boss Phil Parkinson has highlighted that Birmingham were able to outbid Wrexham on potential signing this summer, showing their financial might.

When you consider that Wrexham have been able to do that to other League One clubs, it really hammers home the power Birmingham hold in the transfer market at this level.

That is something Wrexham can’t quite compete with right now, especially given Birmingham’s history as a Premier League and top Championship club.

Wrexham are on a unique journey and shouldn’t be compared to Birmingham at this stage, even if both have the same goal – getting out of League One and moving up the leagues.
