How English media reacted to Georginio Rutter’s second start for Brighton vs Nottingham Forest

Georginio Rutter left Leeds United in the summer to join Brighton in a club-record fee after the Seagulls activated a release clause worth £40m in the Frenchman’s contract.

Rutter struggled initially at Leeds but came to life following the club’s relegation. The former Rennes and Hoffenheim star had a hand in 24 goals last season during 51 matches as Leeds reached the play-off final.

But Rutter and Leeds failed to beat Southampton at Wembley. It opened up the possibility of a few exits in the summer with Leeds forced to do another season in the Championship, and Rutter left for Brighton.

He was not the only one to go, with Archie Gray joining Tottenham and Crysencio Summerville leaving for West Ham. Rutter recently said he feels better at Brighton in the Premier League, than he did at Leeds.

On Sunday afternoon, Rutter won his second Premier League start for Brighton in an exciting 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest but Rutter did little to impact the game and was taken off on 71 minutes.

English media react to Georginio Rutter’s second Brighton start after Leeds United exit

It was another former Leeds striker that got himself on the score sheet in Chris Wood, who gave Forest the lead from the penalty spot. But Brighton were winning by half-time, Jack Hinshlewood equalising.

Then, Danny Welbeck netting a superb free-kick. Forest equalised on 70 minutes, a few seconds before Rutter was subbed off. Sussex World handed Rutter a rating of 6/10, saying he took “too many touches”.

“In a slick spell of play in the 9th minute, Rutter threaded through a lovely pass for Adingra. At the start of the second half, he got a chance to shoot. He took too many touches, squandering the chance.”

Meanwhile, Vavel handed Rutter a slightly better rating of 7/10 in their player ratings piece. But they did highlight that Rutter had five shots at goal but was unable to test Nottingham Forest stopper Matz Sels.

“Rutter had five shots in the game but not one was able to test Matz Sels in the Forest net. With a little more composure in front of goal, the Albion will have themselves another great option in attack.”

Rutter’s career stats in Premier League with Leeds and Brighton

As aforementioned, Rutter really struggled in the Premier League. So much so that Sam Allardyce said he wasn’t good enough for Leeds initially, when Big Sam took over at Elland Road for four games in 2022-23.

He was afforded just 11 Premier League appearances with Leeds following his move to Elland Road in the January window of 2022-23. Only one start at Stamford Bridge, failing to score and laying on one assist.

Now at Brighton, he has played four times in England’s top tier. Two from the bench, two from the start but the £40m Seagulls star is yet to either score or assist for Fabian Hurtzeler’s side this season.
