Why Modou Faal may already be questioning his move to Wrexham from West Bromwich Albion

Modou Faal has so far failed to make an impact at Wrexham following his summer transfer from West Bromwich Albion.

Phil Parkinson was keen to strengthen his attacking ranks during the 2024 summer transfer window.

The Red Dragons were linked with a plethora of centre-forwards during the most recent window.

Wrexham wanted Will Lankshear but Tottenham Hotspurs changed their mind about letting the youngster leave on loan this season.

Bailey Cadamarteri was linked as well but he instead left Sheffield Wednesday to join the Welsh outfit’s League One rivals, Lincoln City.

But Parkinson would eventually get his man, with Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney smashing the club’s transfer record in the process.

Wrexham confirmed the signing of West Bromwich Albion striker Modou Faal for a new club-record fee of £590,000 on deadline day last month.

Faal looked a shrewd signing for the newly-promoted side but he may already be regretting his decision to move to Wales.

Why Modou Faal may have Wrexham transfer regret

Faal, who was previously dubbed ‘unplayable’ by journalist Gab Sutton, was a standout star for West Brom’s U21 side, finding the net 14 times and providing three assists in 33 matches.

The 21-year-old earned three senior appearances for the Bagies’ senior team as well, including one Carabao Cup outing last month, in which he scored versus Fleetwood Town.

Since his move to Wrexham, however, Faal has struggled for any sort of regular playing time.

It is still very early in the campaign, but the centre-forward may already be questioning his decision to move to the Racecourse Ground.

Faal made his debut for the Welsh outfit on September 10th, playing 78 minutes as Wrexham beat Salford City 2-1 in an EFL Trophy clash.

However, the former West Brom man is still yet to garner a single minute of league action in 2024/25.

He was left on the bench for wins over Peterborough United and Shrewsbury Town and was not even in the squad when Wrexham lost 3-1 versus Birmingham City on Monday.

Phil Parkinson has Modou Faal problem at Wrexham

With Faal Wrexham’s record transfer, Parkinson may feel some pressure to hand the forward more playing time.

But right now, the former Bolton Wanderers manager is finding it hard to fit his summer addition into the team.

Jack Marriott has been in top form during the early stages of the 2024/25 campaign.

The 30-year-old recently won the League One Goal of the Month award for August for his strike versus Wycombe Wanderers on the opening weekend and has scored four in six league ties this term.

Paul Mullin has returned from injury as well and is now competing with Marriott to get his starting berth back.

This leaves very little room up front for Faal as Parkinson cannot really drop Marriott due to his form and when he eventually does, it will likely be the club’s record scorer, Mullin, who takes his place in the team.
