Wrexham expert warns Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds they are in danger of losing ‘terrific’ star

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have been sent a transfer warning over one of their key Wrexham players.

Since Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds took over Wrexham in 2021, it has been the Welsh outfit who have done the majority of the poaching.

Paul Mullin made a shock move to the Racecourse Ground in 2021 despite having previously shone in League One.

The likes of Ollie Palmer and Elliot Lee have all dropped down the football league ladder in order to link up with the Red Dragons.

Most recently, Wrexham signed George Dobson on a free transfer despite interest from other, more established League One teams.

But now Wrexham have climbed up into the third tier of English football, some of their players are now likely to be of interest to sides in the Championship or maybe even the Premier League.

One player who is bound to receive transfer interest if he keeps up his current form is Max Cleworth.

The centre-back was man of the match in that tie, with Phil Parkinson labelling Cleworth ‘terrific’ post-game.

The 22-year-old provided the assist for Lee’s opening goal and then scored the winner in the second half.

Now, after his starring display on Saturday, Wrexham expert Rich Fay, speaking on the Rob. Ryan. Red podcast, has warned that Cleworth could now be poached away from the Welsh side.

He said: “Max [Cleworth], wow, wow, wow. He just seems to be getting better and better and better.

“Obviously his game’s not about goals but the fact he’s scoring as well. If anything, I’m quite worried because it means suitors are going to be looking and saying ‘God this is a young player that we could maybe poach in a few years’.

“It’s going to be interesting to see how Wrexham deal with it. As long as we’re doing well, it’s not a problem, but if we did have a season of stability, I’m sure Max will be getting offers from everywhere.”

What Paul Mullin and James McClean said about Max Cleworth

Cleworth has so far played every minute of league action for Wrexham during the 2024/25 campaign.

And his goal against Crawley now means he is the club’s joint-second top scorer in the league so far this term.

As well as adding an attacking threat to his game over the last six weeks or so, the Englishman has been superb defensively, helping Wrexham keep the joint-second-best defensive record in the division.

After Crawley, both Mullin and James McClean were quick to heap praise on Cleworth, who is Wrexham’s latest rising star.

Reacting to the young defender’s post on Instagram, Mullin said: “Super Maxy Cleworth” accompanied by a fire emoji, while McClean commented: “Bagsman”.

Wrexham face Leyton Orient in a League One fixture this Saturday and Cleworth is sure to once again be one of the first names on Parkinson’s teamsheet when he is selecting his eleven.
