‘Brilliant’ 90-touch Wrexham ace was rare positive for Phil Parkinson in Stevenage defeat

Phil Parkinson should be pleased with the display of one Wrexham player versus Stevenage.

It was an evening to forget for Phil Parkinson when he took his Wrexham side to Broadhall Way for a meeting with Stevenage.

The former Bolton Wanderers boss made several changes to his starting line-up, none of which really paid off.

Despite having a plethora of quality centre-forward options, Wrexham lacked any real attacking threat versus Stevenage.

Stevenage took the lead after just 10 minutes via Louis Thompson and were able to hold out to secure a 1-0 win.

That defeat has left the Red Dragons sat second in the League One table and already five points behind Birmingham City having played one more game this term.

Thomas O’Connor struggled for Wrexham vs Stevenage as did a number of other stars but there was one bright spark for Parkinson.

 

Eoghan O’Connell was only positive for Wrexham vs Stevenage

After Max Cleworth suffered an injury, Wrexham’s backline was expected to struggle going forward.

The stopper has been in sensational form during the early stages of 2024/25, with his absence leaving a big hole in the club’s backline.

Summer signing Dan Scarr came into the eleven for the first time in the league on Tuesday evening and played well.

But it was Eoghan O’Connell who really impressed on the night despite Wrexham as a whole struggling.

Leader Live called the centre-back ‘brilliant’ in their player ratings from the game while he was the highest-rated player on Sofascore coming out of the clash.

O’Connell had 90 touches, won five of his six ground duels, seven of his 10 aerial duels, made two clearances, two blocks, three interceptions and three tackles.

 

Phil Parkinson may need to drop Wrexham star vs Northampton Town

Wrexham are back in league action later this week, taking on Northampton Town at the Racecourse Ground.

Wrexham’s away record is concerning so far in 2024/25, with two defeats and two draws already from just five fixtures.

However, the Welsh side are generally solid at home and should be favourites to pick up a much-needed three points at the weekend.

But after struggling for the second game in a row, O’Connor may need to be dropped to ensure Wrexham’s backline improves somewhat.

Summer signing Lewis Brunt is yet to make a start in League One this season but could come into the eleven in place of the out-of-form centre-back next time out.
