What Jurgen Klopp once said about potential Steve Cooper successor shows why Leicester City need him

Leicester City have not started the season well under Steve Cooper as they have recorded just three points in the Premier League.

Steve Cooper is also winless after six league matches, with Leicester City‘s three points coming from draws with Tottenham Hotspur, Crystal Palace and Everton.

Whilst the draw with Tottenham was a good one given Leicester were second best, Cooper saw his side squander a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 at Palace.

Most worrying, though, is that Leicester were lucky to salvage a draw against relegation rivals Everton at home as they managed just two shots on target in the 1-1 draw.

A 4-2 loss at Arsenal last time out showed signs that Leicester are willing to fight for Cooper, but it is still another defeat on the record.

Time running out for Steve Cooper at Leicester City

Had Leicester managed to hold on for a draw against Arsenal it could have really kickstarted their season.

However, two goals in second-half stoppage time crudely snatched a point away from the Foxes and Cooper now knows there can be no more excuses.

That is because Leicester face four teams likely to be battling relegation themselves in the next four league fixtures in Bournemouth, Southampton, Nottingham Forest and Ipswich Town.

Of those four matches a defeat against rivals Forest could be most damning, but Cooper needs a very decent return from the 12 points up for grabs or he could find himself unemployed.

Jurgen Klopp comments show Leicester City should target David Moyes

If Leicester are minded to sack Cooper there are two routes they could decide to take.

The first would be to again pursue summer target Graham Potter who plays an attractive brand of football and has a good record of developing players.

The second could see them target a more pragmatic manager who has a wealth of experience in the Premier League.

That would be a perfect description of David Moyes and the veteran manager is available having left West Ham at the end of last season.

Moyes is a manager who likes to focus on the defence first and this could be crucial to Leicester’s survival chances given they are yet to keep a clean sheet in the Premier League.

Moyes would certainly have the backing of former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who said on the then-West Ham boss in April: “He has done a ridiculously good job. He is one of the best colleagues too.

“We have spoken a lot over the years and a lot before games. I respect him and he is doing an incredible job.”

Moyes may not be viewed as the most exciting appointment but Leicester fans would likely argue neither was Cooper.

However, they would also likely argue that Moyes would give them a far greater chance of beating the drop this season.
