Leicester City can fix big Steve Cooper issue by hiring manager Ange Postecoglou rates ‘so highly’

Steve Cooper may feel like the walls are closing in on him at Leicester City despite the fact we are just six games into the Premier League season.

Leicester City are yet to win in the Premier League under Steve Cooper and have three points from a possible 18.

Draws against Tottenham Hotspur, Crystal Palace and Everton handed Leicester those points, whilst the 4-2 defeat against Arsenal at the weekend was the latest of three defeats.

Cooper will have been encouraged by Leicester’s battling display against Arsenal as it took two second-half stoppage time goals to eventually break the Foxes’ resistance.

However, the next four games are crucial and if things do not go well then Leicester could look to replace Cooper with an experienced Premier League manager who would help fix a key issue.

David Moyes could be ideal Steve Cooper replacement at Leicester City

Leicester have been competitive in each of the games they have played since returning to the top flight; at least in terms of the scoreline.

The two goal deficit against Arsenal was the biggest Leicester have been on the receiving end of, with defeats against Fulham and Aston Villa both finishing 2-1.

However, the most alarming thing for Leicester is that they are yet to keep a Premier League clean sheet under Cooper.

The former Nottingham Forest manager was not exactly welcomed with open arms due to his association with Leicester’s rivals but also because of his perceived negative tactics.

This risk-averse style has been evident in the opening weeks of the season and it is far easier to stomach if it results in clean sheets and points.

For this reason, whilst it again may not be considered the most inspiring of choices, Leicester should give strong consideration to replacing Cooper with David Moyes.

Moyes is available having been out of work since leaving West Ham at the end of last season, with many feeling he was treated harshly by the Hammers.

Leicester have scored at least once in each of their league matches so far this season, so it is clear to see that clean sheets would see them quickly start to pick up wins.

Moyes has a long track record of making his sides very defensively sound whilst maintaining a threat on the counter-attack which would be ideal for Leicester given their pace out wide and in behind.

Moyes won the Europa Conference League in 2023 and has a wealth of experience of keeping sides in the Premier League.

Whilst he may have divided the West Ham fanbase, the 61-year-old certainly has the respect of his peers and Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou was full of praise for the Scot last season as he said: “I think he’s an outstanding manager. I rate him so highly.

“He is one of the ones I have always rated highly. Longevity in the game means something, especially at this level.”

A top manager, Moyes would surely significantly increase the chances that Leicester stay in the top flight this season.
