Leeds United player ratings from Sunderland draw as star scores 9/10, flop gets 1/10

Illan Meslier’s stoppage time error cost Leeds United all three points against Sunderland as the Whites were held to a 2-2 draw at the Stadium of Light. Here are our player ratings:

Illan Meslier – 1

Cost Leeds the game with a howler.

Jayden Bogle – 6

Considerably more suspect defensively than in recent matches gone by grew into it as the game went on. Should’ve weighted a cut-back better in the first half for Largie Ramazani.

Joe Rodon – 7

Questions could perhaps be asked about his slow reaction after Meslier’s save for the first goal and also picked up another booking, meaning he is now just one away from a suspension. Was superb in the second half, however.

Pascal Struijk – 8

The more composed of Leeds’ two central defenders, making some very timely interventions when Leeds were under the cosh.

Junior Firpo – 7

Patrick Roberts was Sunderland’s dangerman throughout and it would be fair to say Firpo struggled at times up against him. Scored a lovely goal to put Leeds ahead, though.

Ao Tanaka – 7

Very busy in that central midfield area and put himself about constantly in challenges. Always looks as though he has time on the ball.

Joe Rothwell – 8

Leeds certainly aren’t as strong defensively with this midfield partnership but Rothwell could not have asked for a much better full league debut. Always looking to pass forward and nearly created a couple of decent chances.

Wilfried Gnonto – 9

Again Leeds’ brightest and most dangerous attacker, providing a superb cross for Joel Piroe’s equaliser, as well as a lovely cut-back for Firpo. Sunderland couldn’t handle him.

Brenden Aaronson – 5

Perhaps the first game this season where Aaronson has struggled a little bit with the physicality of the game. No where near as dangerous as recently, but almost got a lovely assist for Piroe.

Largie Ramazani – 6

Hashed a couple of shots miles over the bar and wasn’t really able to get in the game like he has in any of the last three. Big role in the lead up to Leeds’ second goal, though.

Joel Piroe – 6

Not overly involved in general play but his movement inside the area got him his goal and almost a couple more very decent chances.
