Leeds United player ‘stormed’ off pitch ‘fuming’ after what Illan Meslier did vs Sunderland

Illan Meslier’s 97th minute howler cost Leeds United a huge victory away at Sunderland.

The Whites were held to a 2-2 draw at the Stadium of Light having become the first team in the Championship to even score on Sunderland’s home patch all season.

Having gone behind through Chris Rigg, Leeds battled back well to equalise through Joel Piroe and go in level at the break.

Wilfried Gnonto then provided his second assist of the night for Junior Firpo inside the opening 10 minutes of the second half. From that moment, Leeds defended brilliantly.

However, Meslier somehow let a bouncing ball go under his body and into the net in the 97th minute to cost Leeds what could’ve been an incredible victory.

What Junior Firpo did at full-time of Leeds draw

Having netted his first goal in the Championship, it has unfortunately gone down as a Firpo own goal after Meslier’s mistake.

And according to journalist Graham Smyth, Firpo was not afraid to express his discontent at full-time.

Firpo is said to have stormed down the tunnel at the Stadium of Light immediately after the final whistle, flinging his arms around in frustration.

Unfortunately with an error as poor as this one, it is hard to begrudge Firpo’s reaction, though perhaps he could’ve shown his frustration behind closed doors.

However, Firpo was just a matter of seconds away from being Leeds’ match-winner and it does show how much he cares.

Thankfully for Meslier, there were others around him in the Leeds side who did go and console him at full-time, as well as Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris.

Jeff Stelling calls out Firpo after Leeds reaction

Former Sky Sports Gillette Soccer Saturday presenter Jeff Stelling was not impressed with Firpo’s reaction at full-time.

Stelling believes more should’ve gone over to the Leeds ‘keeper and in particular mentioned Firpo as someone who should not have reacted in that way.

He said: “Would have been nice to see some Leeds players console Meslier a little more – notably Junior Firpo !! A terrible, terrible mistake but nobody feeling worse than the keeper”
