‘Dangerous’ Wrexham player loved by Phil Parkinson earns international call-up

A Wrexham star has earned a rare international call-up for the upcoming October break.

Giving they are only in the midst of their first-ever season in League One, it is somewhat surprising to see a Wrexham player called up for international duty.

While the Premier League and Championship are put on pause during the international break, the lower leagues normally go ahead.

The Red Dragons were one of the few League One sides in action during the international break at the back end of August.

Jack Marriott and the now-injured Max Cleworth scored as Wrexham beat Peterborough United 2-0 at the Racecourse Ground on August 31st before they saw off Shrewsbury Town by three goals to nil in early September.

This month, however, Phil Parkinson and his players will get a rare break when the international action kicks off next week.

Wrexham were scheduled to host Lincoln City on October 12th but Lincoln have received enough international call-ups for that fixture to be called off.

Wrexham star Jacob Mendy receives Gambia call-up

Wrexham have now received a call-up of their own, with left-back Jacob Mendy earning a place in The Gambia squad for their October fixtures.

Mendy has had a tough 2024/25 so far, with injury issues and competition for places seeing him garner just 13 minutes of League One action.

The 27-year-old can still be a big player for Wrexham, however, with Parkinson’s love for Mendy evident when he dubbed him ‘dangerous’ at the back end of July.

Mendy first made his debut for Gambia on November 20th, 2023, and has notched a total of three caps to this point.

Gambia will face Madagascar twice during the international break, with both matches taking place in Morocco.

October 11th at 2pm BST and October 14th (3pm BST) are the dates and times for the meetings for any Wrexham fans eager to see one of their stars in international action.

Other Wrexham stars who could earn international call-ups

While it is probably a bit late for any more players to earn a call-up this month, there are a couple of Wrexham aces who could ply their trade for their countries in the near future.

The club’s record signing Modou Faal qualifies for The Gambia alongside Mendy

But the striker has only started one game this season, which is unlikely to prove enough to earn him a call-up.

Elsewhere, Arthur Okonkwo has held talks over representing Nigeria but that switch is yet to be confirmed, which will, of course, halt any chance of a call-up for the time being.
