Wrexham in danger of losing ‘tremendous’ player for free, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney must act – opinion

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney must do everything in their power to ensure one Wrexham player does not leave the club in 2025.

For the most part, since Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took over at the Racecourse, they have done a good job at keeping hold of all their top players.

This past summer saw seven players depart Wrexham at the ends of their contracts, all being released as free agents.

The likes of Ben Tozer and Luke Young had previously been important players for the Welsh outfit but their time at the club had come to an end amid a huge jump in quality now Wrexham are plying their trade in League One.

Now the Red Dragons are climbing the EFL ladder though, their current top stars are bound to start attracting interest from elsewhere.

McElhenney and Reynolds have been warned they are in danger of losing Max Cleworth in the near future amid his prolific start to 2024/25.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney cannot let Ryan Barnett leave Wrexham for free

Now, with the 2024/25 campaign in full swing, the Wrexham owners must turn their attention toward the contract situation of Ryan Barnett.

The 25-year-old joined Wrexham for an undisclosed fee in February 2023 and has since been a key figure for the club.

His 2024/25 campaign has been particularly prolific, providing two assists in seven League One starts so far.

One club expert dubbed Barnett Wrexham’s player of the season so far ahead of their latest fixture versus Northampton Town.

Co-owner McElhenney praised Barnett after his assist during Wrexham’s 3-0 victory over Reading at the Racecourse Ground in August as well.

However, the American duo must now ensure Barnett does not leave their club for free next year as he is currently out of contract at the end of 2024/25 and still yet to be offered a new deal.

Losing Barnett would be a major blow and given his form so far this term, a few clubs would no doubt love to snap him up for free or for a reduced fee in January.

Other Wrexham players out of contract in 2025

Barnett, previously dubbed ‘tremendous’ is not the only key player Reynolds and McElhenney facing losing for free in the next calendar year though.

Despite scoring four in his first six league games this season, Jack Marriott’s long-term future is in doubt as he too is in the final 12 months of his current deal.

Club legend Ollie Palmer is among the other names due to leave Wrexham for free in 2025.

James Jones, Jacob Mendy, Anthony Forde, Steven Fletcher and goalkeeper Mark Howard are also facing anxious waits over their future at Wrexham.

Liam Hall and Josh Adam, meanwhile, are out of contract next year but the club have the option to extend their deals for a further year.
