Why Kaizer Chiefs can sign Percy Tau on a pre-contract in January.

Recent reports from Egypt indicate that Al Ahly has officially decided on Tau’s future, confirming that the 2024/2025 season will mark his last with the club. With his contract expiring in June 2025, Al Ahly has opted not to renew Tau’s contract due to several key factors.

According to Cairo24, Al Ahly’s management based their decision on Tau’s age, his declining performances, and his high salary demands. The club is now actively searching for a younger foreign player to fill the void left by Tau. Media figure Mohamed El-Leithy highlights this shift, emphasising that Tau’s future has been in jeopardy for some time.

Unravelling relationships and performance concerns

The speculation surrounding Tau’s future intensified when reports surfaced about a breakdown in his relationship with head coach Marcel Kohler. Allegedly, Tau insisted on receiving his full salary if he were to leave the club, complicating matters. However, despite the off-field drama, Tau has achieved significant success with Al Ahly, winning 10 trophies in just three years since joining from Brighton and Hove Albion in 2021.

As Tau enters the final six months of his contract, clubs like Kaizer Chiefs can officially negotiate with him starting in January. Previously linked to the Bafana Bafana attacker, Chiefs did not secure the move during the last transfer window due to financial constraints. Now, Tau seems poised to leave Al Ahly for a new opportunity.

Tau’s desire for a new challenge

Insiders reveal that Tau is eager for a new challenge, stating.  “Tau feels that he has achieved what he wanted to achieve at Al Ahly. I mean he has won everything that is to be won including the Champions League twice. So now he wants a new challenge.” His desire for a fresh start highlights his ambitions beyond Al Ahly.

As Tau’s departure from Al Ahly appears imminent, Kaizer Chiefs management, led by coach Nasreddine Nabi, is already strategizing for the upcoming January transfer window. Chiefs failed to secure strikers in the recent PSL transfer window and are now committed to making offers for top-class attackers, including a renewed interest in Tau.

Percy Tau’s time at Al Ahly is drawing to a close. With the club opting not to renew his contract and his sights set on new challenges, fans can expect significant developments in January. As the transfer window approaches, Tau’s potential move back to the PSL could create an exciting opportunity for both him and Kaizer Chiefs.
