Wrexham are back in League One for the first time in nearly 20 years but Arthur Okonkwo is eyeing even more success.
Wrexham head into this international break sitting second in the League One table.
Phil Parkinson has claimed six wins from the first 10 games of the League One season, racking up 18 goals and conceding just eight in the process.
Wrexham have been on a sensational journey under Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds – and it isn’t over yet.
Promotion to the Championship may still be a big ask despite a superb start to the season, but try telling that to Arthur Okonkwo.
Arthur Okonkwo on Wrexham promotion hopes
Everybody who watches League One action is probably expecting Birmingham City to win the title this season.
The Blues spent massively over the summer and already sit top of the League One table.
After that, it’s all up for grabs with Wrexham certainly staking a claim for promotion to the Championship.
Goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has now spoken on Men in Blazers and responded to questions about chasing promotion.
The shot-stopper was arguably Wrexham’s biggest signing of the summer as he joined on a free transfer from Arsenal.
Okonkwo has now admitted that that he is ‘confident’ that Wrexham can win promotion this season.
Okonwko feels that Wrexham are ‘going for promotion’ and there is ‘no point’ in targeting a mid-table finish.
Even if Wrexham miss out on that goal this season, Okonkwo is confident that another promotion push will be mounted next season.
“I’m not more confident, I’m as confident as I was then,” said Okonkwo when asked about his pre-season stance on promotion.
“I still think we’re going for promotion. I think there’s no point of us thinking about ‘let’s aim for 10th’, we’re not going to do that.
“We’re really positive and yeah, we’re definitely going to try our best to reach as high as possible and if we don’t achieve that, I’m sure we’ll go for it again next season,” he added.
Okonkwo has same opinion as Ryan Reynolds
Okonkwo is clearly aiming high and his comments are reminiscent of Ryan Reynolds’ verdict back in April.
Reynolds suggested that Wrexham were going for another promotion and he simply didn’t know any other way to approach the season.
Reynolds’ ambition is mirrored by Okonkwo and whilst nobody at Wrexham will outright predict promotion, it’s clear that the thought of a third promotion in a row is prominent.
This season could be a big one for Okonkwo too.
Maybe Wrexham win promotion, maybe Okonkwo ends up on the international stage after holding talks with Nigeria.
Having come up in a top Premier League academy, Okonkwo will want to get back to the top flight – and nobody will blame him for an ambitious aim this season.
