Kaizer Chiefs revisited the African forward, as the main target slips away.

Chiefs are set to go back for Kenya striker Michael Olunga, following an unsuccessful bid during the recently concluded transfer window. Insiders at the club reveal that securing Fiston Mayele has become increasingly challenging, making Olunga a more viable option for the upcoming January transfer window.

Sources close to the club reveal that the chances of signing Fiston Mayele are rapidly decreasing. The ongoing negotiations and Pyramids FC’s reluctance to part with him following their recent loss of Fagrie Lakay further complicate the situation, making it clear that Chiefs face significant challenges in securing the striker.

“You see at the moment the Fiston Mayele mission looks impossible because after losing Fagrie Lakay, Pyramids FC don’t want to lose Mayele as well,” one insider explained.

As a result, Chiefs are shifting their focus back to Olunga, believing it will be easier to secure him than to continue chasing Mayele.

Coach Nabi seeks a suitable striker

Kaizer Chiefs’ head coach Nasreddine Nabi emphasises the need for a striker who can effectively complement Ranga Chivaviro in the attack. According to another source, “Yes, the main focus in January is on a striker, and since it’s becoming clear that they may not get Fiston Mayele, they have reignited the Michael Olunga interest.” Nabi views Wandile Duba as more of a winger than a traditional number nine, reinforcing the urgency to find a suitable partner for Chivaviro.

Olunga’s impressive career and form

Currently, Michael Olunga plays for Al-Duhail SC in Qatar, where the 30-year-old has made an impressive start to the season by consistently finding the back of the net. His reputation as a prolific goalscorer, especially during his time in Asia, has attracted the attention of Kaizer Chiefs. The club is keen to sign him, particularly as his contract with Al-Duhail expires in June 2025, presenting a potential opportunity to secure a talented striker for their squad.

Chiefs’ renewed interest in Olunga underscores their strategic approach to bolstering their attacking options. The upcoming negotiations will prove crucial in determining whether the club can successfully bring the Kenyan striker to Naturena and enhance their offensive capabilities for the second half of the season.
