Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has delivered his verdict on two major incidents in Leicester City’s dramatic victory over Southampton.
The Foxes produced a thrilling fightback to win 3-2 against the Saints in the Premier League, having trailed 2-0. On-loan Facundo Buonanotte gave Steve Cooper’s side hope with his third goal of the season on 64 minutes and Jamie Vardy equalised from the penalty spot after being held back inside the box by Southampton’s Ryan Fraser, who was sent off.
Speaking about the Vardy penalty on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch, Gallagher said: “He (Fraser) does stop him (Vardy) putting the ball in the back of the net, pulls him back, stops him kicking the ball so a penalty for a clear foul and a red card for pulling him back to stop the clear goalscoring opportunity.”
“I thought it was a penalty myself,” added Gallagher. “I think if you hold a player’s shirt for five steps, which here he does, that’s a penalty.
“I don’t think even if he went down (they would have given it) because of what they said, it didn’t impact his ability to get the ball, the goalkeeper got the ball. They’re of the opinion the goalkeeper would have got the ball anyhow. I am just of the opinion, if you hold the player’s shirt for more than five steps (it is a penalty).”
