Revealed: What shirt number new Leeds United signing will wear

Leeds United have brought in Bundesliga veteran Josuha Guilavogui on a free transfer for the remainder of the season.

With injuries sidelining captain Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev, the Whites turned to the free-agent market to bolster their squad. Both players are crucial to Daniel Farke’s plans, and their extended absence posed a significant challenge for the manager.

He finalized the deal on Wednesday and was awaiting EFL clearance, but now he’s officially a Leeds United player. The contract is reportedly worth around £1 million, with a weekly salary of £20,000, and he joins on a free transfer until the end of the 2024-25 season.

On Tuesday night, the Frenchman was spotted again at Leeds United’s 2-1 victory over Watford. Leeds Live’s Beren Cross commented on the photo, speculating about what might come next after the player attended two consecutive Leeds games.

“A second Elland Road appearance for Guilavogui,” Cross wrote on X. “Looks like he could be the one for Farke.”

The former VfL Wolfsburg and Atletico Madrid player has several shirt numbers available to him, including 12, 13, 15, 16, 18, 20, and 23. Notably, 23 is the number Guilavogui wore for several years during his time at the Volkswagen Arena.

Guilavogui played for Mainz 05 in the Bundesliga last season, but after his contract expired, he became a free agent. It seems he has been training with Leeds United for the past few days while the club evaluated the possibility of offering him a contract, which they eventually decided to do.

“I have never played in England and I think as a football player this is a really amazing experience and for playing for Leeds, a historic club, this is a wonderful opportunity for me,” Guilavogui told LUTV.

“I am looking forward to training with the team, to help the team on the pitch, outside the pitch as well and hopefully that we set our goals. I had some offers, but nothing that I would say, okay, let’s do it. And when my agent called me and said that Daniel has interest to sign me and watched over me, I said, yeah, let’s go straight, straight to Leeds.”
