Leeds United clinched a 2-1 victory against Watford on Tuesday night at Elland Road, marking their second consecutive win. Despite the positive result, Brenden Aaronson has faced criticism.
After Leeds was relegated from the Premier League in 2023, Aaronson didn’t play in the club’s first season in the Championship, where they missed out on promotion after losing the Championship Play-off Final to Southampton.
During his time at Union Berlin, Aaronson played 38 matches, scoring two goals and providing two assists. However, his stint was brief, as he returned to Leeds after the 2023-24 season.
Back at Leeds this summer, the USMNT player has expressed his determination to redeem himself and become a key figure for the Whites as they aim for Premier League promotion next season.
“It is tough sometimes in moments, mentally and physically,” Aaronson told Sky Sports in September. “I have the drive; I know what I want to do this season. I knew I needed to come in and show my worth and show how good I can be. Coming in, I had to be confident and that is what I have tried to be. It is not easy but it has been made easier with the teammates and the coaching staff we have here.”
Journalist wasn’t impressed with Brenden Aaronson
Although Aaronson scored a goal in the victory over Watford, one journalist seemed unimpressed with his overall performance. Aside from scoring the goal, Aaronson had a tough time making an impact on Tuesday. Journalist Graham Smyth noted that he struggled with physicality against bigger opponents.
“Other than the goal, which he couldn’t really miss, composure was lacking,” Smyth said (h/t GIVE ME SPORT). “Work-rate was there, but struggled physically at times against bigger men.”
Smyth wasn’t the only media member offering criticism as Simon Grayson told BBC Radio Leeds his concern with the American.
“He’s showed a lot of mental strength in coming back,” Simon Grayson said. “Even against Portsmouth. Really energetic. A third goal which is good for a no.10, he brings something different to the team in terms of different no. 10’s.
Aaronson needs to keep proving he’s the No. 10 for this team, showing that Leeds United won’t need to look for a new one when the January transfer window opens.
