According to Football Transfers, Steven Gerrard is in talks with Leeds United over the vacant manager’s position, although he is also in talks with Leicester City.
The Liverpool icon has been out of job since November, when he was fired by Aston Villa, where he took over after winning the SPFL title with Rangers.
He is looking for work, and both relegated opponents are apparently looking into his appointment as they plan a comeback to the Premier League.
Sam Allardyce was announced to leave Elland Road on Friday (2 June), but his replacement is “pending” until the ownership problem is sorted [Phil Hay, 6 June].
However, a deal for 100% ownership of the club has ultimately been agreed upon.
After sacking Jesse Marsch [Talking Transfers, 14 February], the Whites were said to have started conversations with the ex-England captain, and he was named the “early front-runner” by The Times (2 June) when Allardyce left.
Clearly, Leeds United aren’t the only ones who believe he can help them, as Leicester are also in talks with Gerrard, but when compared to some of the other names mentioned, his previous track record may worry some fans.
His successes at Ibrox are undeniable after leading Rangers to their long-awaited 55th league title, but after leaving for the Premier League and Aston Villa, he had significantly less success, and his reign has been rendered even worse by successor Unai Emery’s spectacular turnaround.
Making a final choice early would have been ideal, but that has already been delayed by the ownership battle.
Unless the 49ers were represented in the conversations with Gerrard, continuing the debate after the acquisition agreement may mean losing crucial ground on the Foxes.
One favorite possibility, Brendan Rodgers, appears to be beyond of reach, and the longer the sale drags on, the more likely it is that other options will be secured elsewhere.
The takeover appears to be nearing completion, so whether it is Gerrard or another contender, fans may soon be able to learn more about how the team will look next season.
