One Leicester City star could be facing an axe from the starting side after his showing vs Ipswich Town.
Leicester City came away from Portman Road with a late draw as Jordan Ayew got the game back on level terms in drastically-late fashion.
The game saw Leicester City arguably the better of two sides, however there were still plenty of shortcomings across the pitch for the Foxes.
A surprise cameo of Boubakary Soumare ended very well after he provided the assist for Ayew’s leveller at the death, and the Foxes striker did very well to finish with such composure, but taking away the moment of excellence in the dying embers, there were still some performances that weren’t good enough, and one attacking showing stands out as one that could lead to them being dropped.
Leicester City star Stephy Mavididi could face drop after Ipswich Town performance
The Foxes have been far from consistent when it has come to attacking output, barring the solid performances shown by forward duo Jamie Vardy and Facundo Buonanotte.
Stephy Mavididi was certainly a case on the weekend of a player not quite living up to the billing, with him putting on a performance that certainly ‘frustrated’ against Ipswich Town, per Leicester Mercury.
The attacker, who was utilised down the left-flank for Steve Cooper’s side, looked to particularly struggle in front of goal, as, per SofaScore, the Foxes man didn’t manage a single shot towards goal, whilst also missing a big chance. He also looked somewhat sloppy on the ball and lost possession of the ball on nine different occasions, in which Ben Johnson at right-back for Ipswich was able to continuously get the better of him.
Lack of squad depth could save Stephy Mavididi’s place in the side
After such a performance, there are very few reasons as to why Cooper would look to persevere with him.
He was certainly overshadowed by Abdul Fatawu, Buonanotte and Vardy, not for the first time this season, and if there was a player in the forward line to be dropped, it would certainly be Mavididi.
However, looking towards the bench, as Cooper will be in this instance, there is very little firepower to turn towards that could offer more than Mavididi.
Ayew could potentially be brought in to start for the Foxes, however he has proven to be more useful from off-the-bench, and wide pair Bilal El Khannouss and Kasey McAteer have been unable to do anything so far in the 2024/25 Premier League season.
If Mavididi retains his spot in the side against Man United, it will purely be down to the struggling options behind him, although Cooper will be aware that such a performance against Ipswich can’t be replicated.
