Tottenham have identified Harry Winks as ‘an ideal option’ as they look to bolster their midfield and are willing to more than treble the fee they received for the Leicester City man.

Spanish website Fichajes claims Winks is on Spurs’ radar – despite sending him out on loan in August 2022 and selling him to the Foxes in June 2023 after he became surplus to requirements in north London.

The unlikely claim becomes even more incredible when the story adds Tottenham might be willing to pay €38million – less than 18 months are they sold him to City for a reported £10m. The story points to his ‘growth and maturity’.

It also goes on to say that City ‘will not let him go easily’ and describes him as a ‘mainstay’ of Steve Cooper’s team. In some ways that is right, Winks has started nine of 11 Premier League games so far this season and he was even captain against Man Utd last time out. However, it ignores the fact he spent a couple of matches on the bench as Cooper sought the right combination in the middle of the park.

Winks was a big player for Enzo Maresca in the promotion season – albeit at Championship level – and has already amassed 59 appearances for the Foxes. That is some way short of the 203 he made for Spurs where he came through the youth system before falling down the pecking order.

City have Oliver Skipp, Wilfred Ndidi, Boubakary Soumare and even Hamza Choudhury as options in central midfield.

A bid of £32m might be very tempting to City although the claim it is ‘on the table’ does feel premature. It is also claimed Cooper wants to retain him at ‘all costs’.
