Leeds United defender Charlie Cresswell has returned from injury in a private friendly.
Cresswell was making good progress during his loan stay at Millwall in the second half of last season before he broke his eye socket in April’s goalless draw at home against West Brom.
The 20-year-old needed surgery and missed the rest of the season as the Lions finished ninth, just missing out on a place in the Championship play-offs. Cresswell, on the other hand, was nominated to England’s under-21s team for a three-day training camp this month ahead of the under-21s Euros this summer, and he played 75 minutes of a behind-closed-doors friendly against Japan on Saturday at St George’s Park.
Cresswell began the game, which the Young Lions lost 2-0 thanks to second-half goals from captain Rihito Yamamota and Yuta Matsumura.Emile Smith Rowe of Arsenal, Harvey Elliott of Liverpool, and Anthony Gordon of Newcastle United were among players who started for a strong England under-21s side. With 15 minutes remaining, Cresswell was replaced by Levi Colwill.
The under-21 European Championships will be held in Romania and Georgia between Wednesday, June 21 and Saturday, July 8. England’s group stage opponents will be the Czech Republic, Israel, and Germany, and Carsley will pick his finals side next Wednesday.
