According to Football League World, Leeds United are interested in making a ‘ambitious’ transfer for Coventry City playmaker Gustavo Hamer after a fantastic 2022-23 season, with the midfielder entering the final year of his contract.
Hamer, 25, has spent the last three years with Coventry, but last season was by far his best. Last season, he had 21 goal involvements in 45 appearances for Mark Robins’ side. He scored 11 goals and assisted on another ten.
Last season, the Brazilian-born standout, who has three Netherlands U20 caps, was perhaps one of the Championship’s top players. He assisted Coventry in reaching the play-off final by scoring the game-winning goal in the semi-finals and netting in the final.
Leeds are thought to be planning an audacious move for the number 38. It is considered ambitious because Hamer may choose to select a team from outside the second tier, with European and Premier League clubs keen.
Hamer would be a fantastic addition. He has already demonstrated in the Championship that he is deserving of a place in the Premier League. However, if Premier League clubs are interested, it will be difficult to sign him, according to the report.
It’s possible that Leeds will provide the midfielder with enough assurances to entice him to stay another year in the second division rather than play a little role for a Premier League club. It will be interesting to see which clubs are also interested.
But, with Brenden Aaronson potentially departing and Leeds desperately needing another no.10 other than Sam Greenwood, signing Hamer would be a brilliant piece of business. It is unknown how much money the 49ers will spend.
