Newcastle set to sign 14-goal forward as club to make star face of their project

While the focus in Italy is on Newcastle United’s interest in Nicol Barella, the focus in France is on Moussa Diaby on Friday.

The winger is being ‘targeted’ by the Magpies, who have been attempting ‘for a year’ to make him ‘one of the faces’ of their project, according to L’Equipe.

If you’re a Newcastle fan who’s been following the gossip mill since the club was taken over, you’ll know that’s true, since Newcastle have been associated with the Frenchman for quite some time.

Unfortunately for Eddie Howe, he is an essential element of the vision at Bayer Leverkusen, and some very lofty asking rates have been bandied about in the media.

That said, there may come a moment when the player, who will have ambitions outside his current club, attempts to leave, and Newcastle may be waiting for that.

Arsenal, on the other hand, is said to have ‘taken the lead’ in the race to sign him in recent weeks.

With both clubs in the Champions League next season, it could all come down to who can offer him the greater personal project, something Newcastle will have to consider.

Diaby had 14 goals and 11 assists in 48 games across all competitions last season.
