The goalie appears to be one of many who will quit Elland Road.
According to a new update on Illan Meslier’s future, Leeds United are “willing to listen to offers” this summer.
Since signing from Lorient in 2020 – he previously spent a season on loan at the club – the Frenchman has been an impressive servant for the Whites, emerging as an exciting young ‘keeper with a bright future ahead of him.
Meslier, on the other hand, was unable to prevent Leeds from dropping to the Championship last month, as his form fell short at a critical juncture in the season. The £30,000-a-week Frenchman has a contract at Elland Road until the summer of 2026, but it appears increasingly probable that he will leave before the new season begins.
A new update strongly shows that this is the case, with Meslier appearing to be closer than ever to leaving Leeds this summer, with the club now owned by 49ers Enterprises.
The Whites are “willing to listen to offers” for Meslier in the coming weeks, according to Football Insider, with the 23-year-old told by the club.
According to the source, “Leeds had previously hoped to secure a £40million-plus fee for Meslier, but his poor form in the final months of the 2022/23 season means that a bid of £30million could now seal the deal.”
In reality, it would be a surprise if Meslier was still a Leeds player at the start of the season against Cardiff City at Elland Road in August, with a move elsewhere now appearing likely.
Given his long-term potential – Jack Harrison has described him as “talented” and “fantastic” – the Whites would ideally keep him, but it is understandable why he would not want to play Championship games next season, with Leeds also hoping to bring in some finances.
As a result, Leeds should cash in on Meslier, whose present contract status puts them in a good negotiation position, allowing a sizable sum of money to move toward new acquisitions.
While the Frenchman’s form was undeniably poor at times in 2022/23, losing one of the club’s most talented young players will be a blow, but the hope appears to be that the move will help the Whites in the long run.
