Other Premier League clubs are interested in the teenager as well.
Newcastle United are said to be one of several Premier League clubs interested in signing Flamengo teenager Matheus Franca this summer.
Back in his home country of Brazil, the 19-year-old is a promising young talent who is now delivering eye-catching displays for Flamengo.
Despite his youth, Franca has already scored nine goals in 53 games for his current team and is a six-time Brazil Under-16 international.
The attacking midfielder’s performances do not appear to be going unnoticed across Europe, suggesting that he could move on for a new challenge during the summer transfer window.
The following several months will be vital for Newcastle as they attempt to build on a fantastic 2022/23 season in which they finished fourth in the Premier League and qualified for the Champions League, and Franca appears to be a big objective for them.
The Magpies are one of three top-flight English clubs interested in signing the Flamengo player this summer, according to Globo Esporte [via Sport Witness]. Crystal Palace and West Ham are also in the running, with bids expected in the near future, as is the Brazilian side.
Brighton and Arsenal are also mentioned, as is Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen, with the amount of interest showing Franca’s quality.
Signing a young Brazilian footballer is always intriguing, given that the likes of Pele, Ronaldo, and Neymar have all burst onto the scene as superstars throughout the years, and their flair and recklessness can make them instant fan favorites.
As a result, Franca, described as a “sensation” by journalist Aaron Stokes and a “great midfielder and great striker” who “can play almost everywhere” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, could be a really eye-catching signing for Newcastle, coming in as a long-term prospect with great potential rather than an immediate key starter.
Although he has yet to be demonstrated in Europe, if Eddie Howe believes he has the qualities to shine in England, the manager should be trusted in the transfer market.
Flamengo allegedly slapped a €200m (£171.9m) release clause in Franca’s contract, demonstrating how highly they value him, but the hope is that the Brazilian club is willing to accept an offer far below that amount, allowing Newcastle to go big this summer.
