This summer, the Coventry striker might be on the move.
Leeds United are thought to have made contact with Coventry City striker Viktor Gyokeres about a summer move.
The £3,462-per-week forward had a fantastic 2022/23 season for the Sky Blues, proving to be their star man as they advanced to the Championship playoff final, which they lost on penalties to Luton Town in May.
Gyokeres scored 21 league goals for Coventry, which was only surpassed by Middlesbrough’s Chuba Akpom (28), and he was one of the division’s standout performers, earning a nomination for Championship Player of the Season.
His performances have undoubtedly piqued the interest of a lot of clubs, and Leeds have been linked with a move for him this summer as they try to bring in a top-quality striker to help them battle for promotion in 2023/24.
Is Leeds still interested in signing Gyokeres?
According to O Jogo [via MOT Leeds News], Leeds have made touch with Gyokeres about a summer move, however he would like to leave the Championship.
According to reports, the Swede is close to completing a £17 million move to Sporting CP, which would be a blow to the Whites, thus a deal could be difficult to complete.
This is definitely a setback for Leeds, since Gyokeres is someone who may be perfectly ideal ahead of the next season, especially given how well he has performed in the Championship. Tony Mowbray likened him to Erling Haaland, calling him “powerful” and “really confident.”
With Patrick Bamford no longer looking like the force he once was due to injury issues, and Rodrigo almost certainly leaving in the summer transfer window, the Coventry star could have been the ideal man to lead the line for years to come.
The allure of joining Sporting, which would give him the opportunity to play in Europe, may be too much for him to resist, and it would be a surprise if he chose to stay in the second tier of English football and join Leeds instead.
The goal now is for the Whites to find a good replacement for Gyokeres – someone who can come in and thrive from the start, providing a consistent supply of end product in the final third and guaranteeing Leeds return to the Premier League in no time.
