Another Nottingham Forest striker set for exit as top rival leading race to sign star

Sam Surridge of Nottingham Forest has emerged as a possible transfer target for newly promoted Championship team Ipswich Town. As Steve Cooper tries to restructure his squad, the talisman looks ready to leave the City Ground this summer.

According to writer Darren Witcoop, the Tractor Boys have big aspirations. Everton striker Ellis Simms is on the list, but Surridge has now been added to a wish list of summer transfer targets.

Surridge agreed to terms with Forest in January 2022. He scored eight goals for Nottingham Forest, including a spectacular hat-trick against Swansea in a 5-1 triumph.

Last season, the 24-year-old was somewhat unlucky. He scored once in a 1-1 draw with Bournemouth, although his only start came against Newcastle on the first day of the season.

Surridge was unable to remove Taiwo Awoniyi’s physical presence from the team throughout 2022/23. Cooper saw the Nigerian as the first-choice option after he scored 11 goals in all competitions.

The Forest head coach has already commended the Forest player. Despite being out of the team at times, he was praised by the boss for his application last season and is a competent professional.

Allowing the talisman to depart would be best for all parties, but Forest should first ensure that they have a successor. Surridge, Awoniyi, and Emmanuel Dennis are the club’s only three strikers at the moment.

Ipswich will be looking to build on their League One promotion from the previous season. They’ve made significant progress under Kieran McKenna, but the project isn’t yet finished.

Surridge would lead the team in goals in the Championship. He’s a natural finisher, and the Reds will almost definitely release him this summer.

Next season, the 24-year-old requires regular football. What will be intriguing to watch is if the Reds will let him go permanently or loan him out with the intention of making a more definitive decision in 12 months.
