Liverpool will look to make it back-to-back Premier League victories when they travel to Newcastle United on Saturday.
The Reds earned their first league victory in 2023 when they defeated Everton 2-0 in the Merseyside derby earlier this week. Mo Salah and Cody Gakpo both scored at Anfield.
Now, Jurgen Klopp will be hoping that his team’s excellent performance isn’t a false dawn. Liverpool has struggled this season, finishing ninth in the table.
However, with 17 games remaining, the Reds will not give up on finishing in the top four and qualifying for the Champions League next season.
Newcastle currently sits in fourth place, nine points behind Liverpool. With a win at St James’ Park, Klopp’s men will close the gap and have a game in hand.
Injuries have plagued the Reds all season, but the treatment room is beginning to clear. Virgil van Dijk was an unused substitute, while Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino came off the bench against Everton.
Arthur Melo – thigh
The loaned item The Juventus midfielder has returned to training but was not included in the squad for the match against Everton. He’ll need to work on his fitness after playing only 13 minutes since arriving in the summer. Crystal Palace (A), Saturday 25 February (possible rematch).
Ibrahima Konate – hamstring
The defender has been out for the last two games. Konate has not yet returned to training but is expected to be out for up to three weeks. Potential rematch: Real Madrid (H), Tuesday, February 21.
