According to MTV Uutiset, Exeter City are set to sign Aston Villa goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo on loan for the 2023/24 season.
Sinisalo, 21, spent the first half of the 2022/23 season on loan with Burton Albion in League One. He recorded two clean sheets in eight appearances for the Brewers before returning to Aston Villa in January to back up Emi Martinez.
However, it appears that the Finn may be returning to the EFL.
According to MTV Uutiset in Finland, Exeter City have agreed to a one-year loan agreement for Sinisalo, bringing him in to reinforce their goalkeeping ranks ahead of the new season. He is expected to join the club later this week after taking part in a Villa friendly against Walsall.
It is reported that several other EFL clubs were interested in Sinisalo earlier this summer, but the Grecians were Sinisalo’s choice as they attempt to build on a solid first season under Gary Caldwell.
Exeter City have lost some key players this summer, with just Jack Aitchison and Vincent Harper joining.
Sinisalo would become the Grecians’ third signing, providing a much-needed boost to the goalkeeping ranks. Only 18-year-old prodigy Harry Lee and Gary Woods are now on the books as senior options in goal, giving Sinisalo a solid chance of becoming the first choice at St. James’ Park.
So far, the Finn has mostly had to settle for backup duties, with his only starts coming in youth football. A move to Exeter could change that as he looks to take his career to the next level in the coming season. Time will tell when a deal is announced, but the move appears to be beneficial to all sides.
