Internal Arsenal discussions about the player’s future have taken place, with Newcastle firmly connected with a move as Eddie Howe looks to add left-backs to his team.
Following the signing of Oleksandr Zinchenko from Manchester City, the 26-year-old made just six Premier League starts for Arsenal last season. Tierney only started one of Arsenal’s final seven games in Zinchenko’s absence at the end of the 2022-23 season.
Tierney has been identified as a potential left-back signing for Newcastle this summer, with Arsenal demanding more than £30 million for the Scotland international. The Gunners paid Celtic £25 million to capture Tierney in 2019, with the Scottish Premiership club said to have a 15% sell-on clause.
According to The Mirror, Tierney is interested on returning to his previous club on a low-cost deal due to Celtic’s sell-on clause. According to the source, the Scottish international is willing to accept a considerable wage reduction in order to return to Parkhead this summer.
The left-back position has been identified as a critical area to strengthen this summer, with Dan Burn spending the most of the 2022-23 season there despite being a more natural center-back. Matt Targett, Paul Dummett, Javier Manquillo, and Matt Ritchie, as well as starting right-back Kieran Trippier, can all play in the position.
However, with the long-term futures of Targett, Dummett, Manquillo, and Ritchie all in doubt, the club is said to have made a significant choice on the position.
Newcastle are in negotiations with Burn about a better agreement at St James’ Park, according to Newcastle World. The agreement would most likely extend his existing contract with the club through its expiration date of 2025.
Burn has been a prominent member of the Newcastle squad since his January 2022 arrival from Brighton & Hove Albion, and he has been part of the club’s leadership group while also demonstrating good versatility in defense.
The Blyth-born player will be 33 when his current contract ends, and a new contract might mean the end of his career on Tyneside.
