According to Football Insider, West Ham United are ahead of Newcastle United in the fight to capture Manchester United striker Harry Maguire.
The 30-year-old centre-back’s future is uncertain as United attempt to raise funds for new signings, and he is one of the older players willing to leave.
West Ham have expressed interest in signing Maguire, with David Moyes looking to add another centre-back to his squad.
The Irons have moved ahead of Newcastle, who had been behind the England international all summer, while old suitors Aston Villa have dropped out following the arrival of Pau Torres.
The main stumbling block for buying clubs is Maguire’s hefty United salary, which is worth roughly £190,000 per week and has two years left on it.
That is outside of the salary structures of both West Ham and Newcastle, and he would have to take a pay cut to make a permanent deal.
United are willing to sell Maguire at a huge loss, offering less than half of the £80 million they paid Leicester City for him in 2019. A bid of roughly £35 million could persuade them to sell.
In terms of the player himself, Football Insider stated on Friday (16 June) that despite his absence from the 2022-23 season, he is eager to shine in pre-season at Manchester United.
Maguire is said to be content at Old Trafford despite falling down Erik ten Hag’s pecking order since the Dutchman’s arrival.
If Manchester United are able to sign a top-tier center-back this summer, the England international could fall even farther down the pecking order.
Under Erik ten Hag, Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof, and even natural left-back Luke Shaw all been favored over Maguire.
In other news, West Ham has been told to execute a ‘£25m’ signing that will be ‘fantastic’.
