Fabrizio Romano has finally confirmed Newcastle beat PL clubs in race to sign Monaco star

Newcastle are leading the race to recruit Axel Disasi, according to Sky Sports’ Florian Plettenberg, after ‘serious conversations’ with Monaco.

He says we’re ‘pushing’ to sign the Frenchman and that talks are ‘ongoing.’ This comes after Fabrizio Romano announced last weekend that we had approached the player’s agent about a possible move to St James’ Park, and Steve Kay at FootballTransfers revealed that Disasi has already verbally agreed to move to Tyneside if the two clubs reach an agreement.

The 25-year-old was a regular for the Ligue 1 side last season and represented France at the Qatar World Cup, but he could be on the move, with a number of elite clubs believed to be interested.

Man United are also rumored to be interested in the centre-back, but according to Sky Sports, the Red Devils must trade Harry Maguire first before committing to a deal for Disasi, giving Newcastle the upper hand during talks.

While the Magpies are currently dominating the race, Monaco have yet to receive an official offer for the 6ft 3′ defender. However, it’s encouraging to hear that we’re making progress and pushing for another centre-back, with a right-sided alternative capable of competing with Fabian Schar being prioritized alongside a left-back, midfielder, and winger.
